Morocco Bound 2026 (Mohamed Choukri & Paul Bowles)

Hollywood often uses Morocco as a stand-in for the rest of the Middle East—this journey reveals why: the richness and variety of its terrain, its people, and its culture.

Sip mint tea while the call to prayer echoes through the ancient medinas, wander the blue streets of Chefchaouen that blend into the sky, sit and read with street cats in Essaouira.

In our book club we’ll be reading For Bread Alone by Mohamed Choukri, The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles, and Morocco Bound by Brian T. Edwards, then in Morocco you'll encounter the landscapes, cultures, and contradictions that shaped these unforgettable stories.

Led by Literary Odysseys founder, Zein El-Amine, discover Morocco through the eyes of its novelists and memoirists—and return home with a richer understanding of literature, place, and yourself.

Under the sheltering skies of Morocco

Odyssey Features

Journey Through Ireland has a range of modes. Some days may feature book club sit downs at pubs, snugs, cafes, cozies, and campus gardens, while other days will be marked by an adventure hike along the dramatic coast of Inishmore.

Everywhere there is music, everywhere there are characters from Ulysses stepping out of the page and taking a seat on the barstool besides you.

Food & Drink

Here are some budget-based recommendations by Lonely Planet so you can explore the cuisine of Ireland while we’re in Dublin and Galway.

And here is a list a friend made of his favorite pubs.

Tour Itinerary

Day One: Arrival at Trinity College Dublin & Welcome Gathering

There will be a huddle around dinnertime where we will discuss Bloomsday festivities and a primer on flaneuring. There will also be a rundown of the itinerary and an overview of Ulysses and its importance to Irish and world culture.

Day Two: Bloomsday

We dip our toes in Sandycove’s “40 ft man pool” before venturing to James Joyce Tower—the setting of the first chapter of Ulysses.

Day Three: The Hades Chapter

We are venturing into Glasnevin Cemetary and walking amongst the revolutionary heroes buried there. This is Ireland’s national cemetery where over 1 million rest.

Day Four: Music at the Quays

We depart from Dublin and take a bus from the east to the west coast of Ireland where we’ll explore Galway. Enjoy the legendary buskers, pubs, and live music at the Quays.

Day Five: The Cliffs of Inishmore

Come morning we’ll ferry to Inishmore Island where there’s a CYOA: bicycle, horse-drawn carriage ride along the coast until we reach the world-famous cliffs.

Day Six: Literary Pub Crawl

We return to Dublin, and, come night, we go on a literary pub crawl visiting all the favorite haunts of your favorite writers!

Day Seven: Glendelaugh

What begins as a guided tour in Glendelaugh will evolve into a flexible exploration of the lake—famously the filming location for P.S. I Love You, Mary Shelling, The Vikings Series on HBO, and Braveheart.

Day Eight: Gallery Tour

Peruse the art of the most famous and infamous artists of Dublin before setting up at Temple Bar where the alleyway is covered in Joyce quotes.

Day Nine: Proposal Scene

East of central Dublin, Hoth is perfumed in rhododendrons. Walk along its cliffs as we close our journey with the proposal scene from Ulysses where the wild ferns kiss.

Day Ten: Departure from Ireland & Closing Huddle

We have a closing huddle before we part ways.

Your Guides

I'm Zein El-Amine — writer, educator, and literary organizer dedicated to exploring how place transforms the way we read and write.

Over the past decade, I’ve led immersive Literary Journey programs in Egypt, Morocco, and Ireland, where participants read books in the very settings that inspired them. These journeys blend deep reading, cultural immersion, and place-based pedagogy to make literature a living, collective experience.

My work challenges the idea that literature is confined to classrooms or solitary study. Walking through Cairo’s alleys while reading Naguib Mahfouz, tracing Leopold Bloom’s path through Dublin, or reading Mohamed Choukri in Tangier opens new ways of engaging with narrative, identity, and belonging. Participants—students, writers, and educators alike—discover how geography and community shape interpretation and creativity.

Originally developed in collaboration with the Jiménez-Porter Writers’ House at the University of Maryland, these programs have evolved into Literary Odysseys, a broader initiative that brings together diverse readers to engage deeply with text, history, and place. My teaching and travel-based literary practice invite others to read responsibly across borders and to imagine more inclusive, globally aware approaches to literature.

At the heart of my work is a belief that stories live not only on the page but in the landscapes, languages, and communities that give rise to them. Through immersive reading and shared exploration, I aim to build bridges between worlds—literary, cultural, and human.

By day I teach English Language Arts to 7th graders at an arts school in New York, by night I'm plotting with Zein, come December, to bring Mohamed Choukri’s writing to life.

I help with the administrative side, take photos, and have been day-dreaming about co-facilitating the Morocco trip in December.
